Known compatibility issue with the HP G5 USB-C Laptop Docking Station

Belkin has identified a compatibility issue with HP® G5 USB-C® Laptop Docking Stations using DisplayPort™ video output to our Secure KVM’s. This impacts any Belkin NIAP PP3.0 and PP4.0 KVM using DisplayPort inputs.

The issue has been identified when using a laptop running an ATI (AMD) video chipset and connecting the HP G5 USB-C dock to the KVM using the DisplayPort output ports on the dock. We have performed thorough testing with this dock as well as multiple laptop video chipsets and found that the issue is due to a conflict with HDCP signal handling with this dock and the ATI (AMD) video chipset.

Some things you might see with this issue

  • When connecting your laptop directly to the KVM using DisplayPort, you will see a display on the monitors connected to the KVM. But using the HP G5 dock between the KVM and the laptop, you will not receive any image with a direct DisplayPort connection.
  • Other docks will work with the KVM and display an image on the connected screens.
  • Using the HDMI® output of the dock will allow an image to display.
  • Using a USB-C to DisplayPort adapter with the dock will allow an image to display even though the DisplayPort ports on the dock do not.
  • Using a laptop with NVIDIA or Intel® video chipsets does not exhibit any display issues with DisplayPort.

Troubleshooting and workarounds

We have discovered a couple of simple workarounds that you can use with your ATI (AMD) chipset laptops that will allow you to get an image through the KVM when using the HP G5 USB-C dock.

Hardware workarounds

  • You can use an active DisplayPort to HDMI adapter or cable from the dock to the KVM.
  • You can use the HDMI port from the dock into the KVM.
  • You can use a USB-C to your choice of video adapter from the USB-C port on the dock to the KVM.

Software workaround

Install the ATI control panel application on your laptop, start up the application, and disable HDCP. Then, reboot the KVM and the laptop (it may take two or three reboots). After this, the laptop should display an image through the KVM when using DisplayPort to DisplayPort.
