Why does my Wemo Dimmer WDS070 keep lighting up red and turning OFF

The Wemo Smart Dimmer with Thread, WDS070 features overheat protection.  If there is a wiring condition or too much of a load is put on the dimmer, the increased power flow through the dimmer will cause it to heat up.  The overheat protection is in place to help reduce the chance of damage to your wiring, the dimmer itself, and your home.

If you see a red flashing light on the front of the Wemo Dimmer WDS070, it indicates that the overheat protection has been activated.  When this happens, the power flow will be cut OFF through the Wemo Dimmer WDS070 for 5 minutes, allowing it to cool down.

During the time that the Wemo Dimmer WDS070 is OFF, it is important that you allow it to completely cool down before trying to turn it ON again.  Turning it ON too early can potentially cause damage to your Wemo Dimmer WDS070 and to any devices connected to it.

If your Wemo Dimmer WDS070 repeatedly turns OFF due to overheat protection, we recommend discontinuing usage of the dimmer.  Investigate to find the cause of the issue.  Some items we recommend checking:

  • Check the power ratings of the lights connected to the Wemo Dimmer WDS070.  Make sure they do not exceed the maximum Watt rating for their bulb type.
  • Make sure you are using only a single type of bulb (Incandescent, CFL or LED) in the circuit with the dimmer.  It is highly recommended to not mix and match bulb types.
  • The Wemo Dimmer WDS070 should only be used with lights.  It should not be used to control an outlet.
  • The Wemo Dimmer WDS070 should not be used to control motors such as a fan.  It is not designed to handle these types of loads.
  • Check the wiring connected to the Wemo Dimmer WDS070 to ensure that there are not any shorts being created by exposed wiring.  You may need an electrician for this.
  • If you have a neutral wire available in your gang box, make sure it is connected to the Wemo Dimmer WDS070.  This will help in routing power back to your fuse or breaker panel.
  • If you have a ground wire available in your gang box, make sure it is connected to the Wemo Dimmer WDS070.  This will help in routing excess power to the ground for safety reasons.

NOTE:  We highly recommend contacting a licensed electrician when investigating any wiring issues for safety reasons.
