Setting up a static IP address on your device

Assigning a static IP address on a computer allows it to obtain the same IP address every time it boots up. The static IP address that you will create should have the same first three sets of numbers as your router’s local IP address. This enables the router to determine that the computer is part of its network. For example, if the router’s local IP address is 192.168.1.1, you can assign 192.168.1.X, where X can be any number between 2 and 253.

Follow the steps below to know how to set up a static IP address on different operating systems.

NOTE: This article assumes that you know your router’s default gateway or local IP address, subnet mask, and DNS servers. You need them to set up the static IP settings on your computer. Otherwise, access your router’s web-based setup page to check them.

Windows® 8

Step 1:
Press the Windows User-added image

key on your keyboard to show the Start screen then click Desktop.

Step 2:
Right-click on the Network Connections icon located in the system tray then click Open Network and Sharing Center.

Step 3:
Click on Change adapter settings.

Step 4:
Right-click on the Ethernet adapter icon and click Properties.

Step 5:
Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) then click Properties.

Step 6:
Select Use the following IP address and enter the necessary information on the IP address, Subnet mask, and Default gateway fields.

Step 7:
Select Use the following DNS server addresses. You can enter "8.8.8.8" in Preferred DNS server and "8.8.4.4" in Alternate DNS server.

Step 8:
Click OK.

Windows 7

Step 1:
Click on the Pearl button then click Control Panel.

Step 2:
In the Control Panel window, click on View network status and tasks.

Step 3:
Click on Local Area Connection.

Step 4:
Click Properties.

Step 5:
Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), then click the Properties button.

Step 6:
Select the Use the following IP address radio button and enter the necessary values on the IP address, Subnet mask, and Default gateway fields.

Step 7:
Click the Use the following DNS server addresses radio button. You can enter "8.8.8.8" in Preferred DNS server and "8.8.4.4" in Alternate DNS server.

Step 8:
Click OK to save the changes.

macOS®

Step 1:
Click the Apple® icon located at the top left corner of the screen, then select System Preferences...from the menu.

Step 2:
On the System Preferences window, click the Network icon.

Step 3:
On the Network window, select Automatic and Built-in Ethernet on the Location and Show drop-down menus, respectively.

Step 4:
Under TCP/IP, select Manually on the Configure IPv4 drop-down menu. Enter the static IP address and subnet mask to their respective fields and enter the router's local IP address in the Router field. In the DNS Servers field, you may enter "8.8.8.8".

Step 5:
Click Apply Now to save the changes.

How to change the DNS server settings on your Mac® computer

When you connect to the WiFi, your Mac computer will obtain an IP address and DNS address automatically from the router. If you would like to use a custom DNS server, you can do this easily by following the steps below.

Step 1:
In the Menu bar, click on the Apple icon and choose System Preferences.

Step 2:
Click on the User-added image

icon.

Step 3:
Select the Wi-Fi icon and click the Advanced... button.

Step 4:
Click on DNS to bring up the DNS Servers menu. Click on the + button to add the custom DNS server.

Here are some free public DNS servers that you can use:

Google™ DNS:

8.8.8.8
8.8.4.4

OpenDNS:

208.67.222.222
208.67.222.220

Step 5:
Once you have entered the server address, click on OK to go back and then click the Apply button to save your changes.

How to change the DNS server settings on your iPhone® or iPad®

When you connect to the WiFi, your iPhone or iPad will obtain an IP address and DNS address automatically from the router. If you would like to use a custom DNS server, you can do this easily by following the steps below.

Step 1:
On your iOS device, go to Settings.

Step 2:
Choose Wi-Fi to show the network you are connected to.

Step 3:
Tap on the i icon next to the WiFi name.

Step 4:
Scroll down and tap on the DNS option to enter the DNS address you wish to use.

OpenDNS:

208.67.222.222

How to change the DNS server settings on your Android™ phone or tablet

When you connect to the WiFi, your Android phone or tablet will obtain an IP address and DNS address automatically from the router. If you would like to use a custom DNS server, you can do this easily by following the steps below.

Step 1:
On your Android device, go to Settings.

Step 2:
Tap Wi-Fi to show the network you are connected to.

Step 3:
Press and hold on the WiFi name you are connected to.

Step 4:
On the pop-up menu, select Modify network.

Step 5:
Scroll down the list until you see IP settings. Tap and hold DHCP.
